I was reluctant to run this story, mostly due to the fact that I am a worse than atrocious speller and have never been above grammar mistakes myself. Furthermore, I see this kind of error as mostly an irrelevancy. What I do care about however is the unfair standards applied to both campaigns. Loaded Orygun, the Official Steve Novick Media Outlet and Fan Club, devoted 729 words in November to harping on the Jeff Merkley campaign for spelling the country of Colombia with a u in a press release. They went as far as to claim that the typo brings in to question whether Merkley:

will seriously take it to Smith, and not even slow down when they got to Washington.

However, Steve Novick had his own snafu recently as humorously reported by Kevin over at the excellent read, Premeptive Karma. Here is a screen shot of Novick’s web site and press release concerning the genocide in Darfur:
Whoops! Bill Gates may have founded an evil empire in Microsoft, but he certainly isn’t the Secretary of Defense. Robert Gates, however, does hold the post. Yet, where is Loaded Orygun now? Surely they have front paged an article about how Novick’s campaign is amateur hour and doesn’t have the gumption to take on Smith, right?

Campaigns make mistakes, just as we all do. Bob Gates turns into Bill Gates as easily as Colombia turns into Columbia. But the hackery in this primary is just absurd. I will not suggest that this minor mistake has any significance in securing donors or votes, nor is it telling of the candidates ability to beat Smith or be a good Senator. However, it does do an excellent job of reminding us how far down the rabbit hole Loaded Orygun has fallen, when its author thinks that trivialities and molehills which should be brushed off become mountains, determining the course of history in favor of Steve Novick.
